When we started planning our trip to Blue Mountain I knew we couldn’t visit without trying the hot rock yoga at Iwa Spa. This yoga studio is the only one of it’s kind in North America, and unlike traditional yoga studios this one includes volcanic rock imported from Brazil. The rock’s lava is heated with water coils and you practise yoga directly on the rocks to feel the warmth and healing properties on your body.
The room looks a bit like a sauna thanks to the wood paneling and the warm air that hits you as soon as you walk in. The cool blue lighting and the contrasting volcanic rock floor make you feel instantly transported to a state of relaxation. The room was warm, but not too hot, a welcoming change from the hot yoga classes I’ve tried in the past. In fact, this class was nothing like hot yoga and even though the ground was warm my body never broke out into a sweat and my asthma never acted up. It was so much more enjoyable than hot yoga!
The class was slow and calming, making it perfect for anyone who’s never tried yoga before. It was 60 minutes of slow stretching with the heat of the rocks gently loosening up our muscles without an effort on our end. Because the volcanic rock has such strong healing properties, the class is designed so that you spend as much time as possible with your body touching the rock. All of the poses involved us laying on the floor, either on our front or our back, which is why I say this class is great for beginners. It wasn’t about advanced yoga poses, but rather about giving your body a detoxing stretch .I left the class feeling like I had just received a massage, and those feelings were still there the following day.
Booking is absolutely essential as spaces are limited to only 8 participants per class, and classes do book out. Reserve your spot by getting in touch with the friendly staff via phone or email. You can find their contact information on their website, right here. - Bring a water bottle – you’ll want to stay hydrated!
- Dress comfortable for the warm room. A sports bra and leggings were perfect – a tank top was too much clothing for me.
- Lockers are provided just outside the room, so you can stash you cell phone, purse and keys out of sight.
The team at Kelly Ella Maz were welcomed to Iwa Spa as guests, however our opinions remain our own.
