Even if you don’t know much about the Gili Islands I’m willing to bet you’ve seen a picture of the famous ocean swings on social media that are located on the largest of the three islands – Gili Trawangan! When I was planning our trip to the Gili Islands that swing was at the top of my to-do list and the biggest priority for me!
After a bit of research I learned that there’s actually three ocean swings, and they all happen to be located at a hotel called Hotel Ombak Sunset. Without bothering to look at any other accommodation on the island I booked this hotel and started daydreaming about our upcoming visit!
Fast forward a few months and now we’re actually in the Gili Islands and we’ve just checked out of Hotel Ombak Sunset. The swings were even better than I expected and we got some incredible pictures on them! I spent my 27th birthday swinging over the Indian Ocean without a care in the world – if this isn’t bliss I don’t know what is…
I didn’t know much about Hotel Ombak Sunset (other than the swings of course) so imagine my surprise when we showed up and realized it was one of the best hotels on the island! We received 5 star service from the minute we arrived and the wonderful staff were so welcoming.
We stayed in a sunset bungalow which was a spacious private villa with a king sized bed, desk, huge closet and a nice big flat screen TV for a bit of late night movie watching! The room was perfectly clean and the AC kept us feeling cooled and refreshed when we needed to hide from the hot Lombok sun.
Our sunset bungalow came with an outdoor bathroom with a beautiful garden. There’s something so relaxing about showering outside, especially in a tropical setting! Our outdoor bathroom felt very spa-like and the high quality bathroom products were nice too!
Although the beach at the hotel is quite beautiful it isn’t the best for swimming (the entire island is like this). Not to worry though as the hotel has a massive infinity pool overlooking the ocean with tons of sun loungers and a swim-up bar. No matter what time of day we visited we never had a problem finding a lounge chair – despite how busy it was!
The restaurant at the hotel was also really good. We ate at the breakfast buffet both mornings and really loved the egg station where I ate a green pepper and spinach omlette each morning. Good eggs aren’t easy to find in Indonesia so I enjoyed every bite of my breakfasts here.
For dinner we ate at their beach restaurant and ordered off their grill menu. A buffet is set up outside on the beach and dining tables are placed in the sand. You order whatever skewers, fish or meat you would like and the buffet of soup, salads and side dishes is included. Paul’s beef medallion was incredible and my beef skewers and tuna skewers were both fantastic. This was a really great dinner and the beach setting made it even more special. Make sure you save room for dessert though! The crème brulee and the chocolate espresso dessert were incredible.
Overall we had such an incredible time at Hotel Ombak Sunset and I can’t imagine staying anywhere else. If you’re looking for the perfect hotel on Gili Trawangan I promise you this is the one! Check out their website to book a room.
