Stepping into Puri Gangga Resort is like stepping into paradise! The lobby is completely open and the smiling staff are waiting to welcome you as soon as you step out of your car. Check-in was quick and before long we were on our way to the restaurant for a delicious welcome drink.
The first thing we noticed about the resort was the stunning pool. A huge infinity pool overlooking the jungle, the rice fields and a water temple below. It was a pretty exciting sight, and the start to a perfect stay.
The hotel is located 25 minutes north of the centre of Ubud. I love Ubud, but the city can be a bit busy so I loved that this resort was further away from the action. It felt more like a retreat with the serene setting and the stunning views. From the pool and the restaurant you actually have views of a nearby water temple!
The location was never an issue for us because the hotel offers a free shuttle into Ubud and back four different times per day. The shuttle drops you off right at Ubud Palace – fantastic service!
We stayed in a deluxe room. It had a gorgeous king sized bed draped in netting, and a patio that overlooked the infinity pool. I loved that there was plenty of storage space with a huge closet, and a huge bench for luggage. There was also a desk area perfect for working, but I found I did most of my work from the table and chairs on the patio. The room was perfectly clean, spacious and comfortable.
The bathroom was equally as beautiful with a stunning spa shower and a bathtub so big it felt more like a hot tub. The tub had a view into the garden, which was also a great view at sunset! Seeing as this is a luxury hotel, the bathtub also came with bath salts!
The on-site restaurant is called Kailasha, and we had a number of meals here. The included breakfast was fresh and delicious, with great portion sizes and a great selection. The green juice at breakfast was amazing, as is their watermelon-ginger-mint juice. The oatmeal was also the best I’ve ever had.
For our last dinner at the resort we had a romantic poolside dinner. It was unforgettable! The staff had decorated around the pool and there were flower petals everywhere. Eating dinner by candlelight overlooking the infinity pool was certainly romantic, but the food really stole the show!
The spa at the hotel feels slightly hidden, located down a narrow staircase below the restaurant. I was blown away as soon as I entered the treatment rooms! Each of the rooms are open to the elements in what feels like a giant window looking out into the tropical gardens. It’s pretty relaxing too.
Our stay included a welcome foot massage. Our therapists were professional and great at their jobs! After a long day of sightseeing in Ubud their foot massage was the best way to ease my aching feet and sore legs.
In true Ubud-style Puri Gangga Resort offers daily yoga classes at 8am. The hour-long classes are taught by wonderful instructors who will help you start your day in a positive, healthy way.
The yoga studio has three sets of glass doors that open up onto balconies overlooking the rice terraces below. It’s a stunning view to catch a glimpse of between warrior poses! There’s something inspiring about a beautiful setting while working out too, because my classes at Puri Gangga Resort were some of my best ever.
In case this resort wasn’t impressive enough, they also offer a very unique activity that we were eager to try out. The “purification ceremony and picnic” is a three hour excursion that starts with a 20 minute walk through a local village to a water temple. At the water temple we participated in a purification ceremony alongside locals from the village.
After the ceremony we went for a 30 minute all through the rice fields where we snapped tons of great pictures. At the end of our walk we came to a table set for two underneath a gazebo set in the middle of a rice field. This was our location for lunch and it was incredible! I wrote about this experience in a separate article – and you can read it here.
