Barcelona’s Best Tapas Bars

Most tourists are completely unaware that tapas are not actually local to Barcelona, but rather the southern region near Seville. This makes it a little bit hard to find authentic tapas bars in Barcelona, since most are just catering to tourists. I’ve been to my share of crappy tapas bars in Barcelona (Txapela rings a bell…), but I’ve also found a couple of gems! Here’s my list of Barcelona’s best tapas bar:

La Plata

This is one of the oldest tapas bars in Barcelona, and certainly the most original! With only 4 items on the menu there isn’t a lot of choice, so just order one of each! They’re best known for their sardines and 1€ glasses of wine. You probably won’t get a table, so just squeeze up to the bar and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Bormuth

This is a fairly new tapas bar in Barcelona, and it’s popular with the mid-twenties crowd. The music is pumping, the waiters are fun and the tapas are good. This is a great place to come around 7pm, for a few tapas and drinks before heading to dinner at 10pm.

El Pitu Del Born

Of all the tapas bars I’ve tried, this one has the best fried padron peppers! Perfectly cooked and just enough salt. I also really love their tomato bread here, more than anywhere else. This tapas bar is conveniently located in El Born.

Ocana

I was hesitant to try this restaurant because it’s located in the tourist-popular Placa Reial, but I’m so happy I did! It was actually filled with lots of Catalan-speaking locals. All of the tapas I ate were of very high quality, even though the prices we’re very reasonable. The squid, padron peppers and gazpacho were my favourite dishes. This tapas bar was also a bit more lively than others, and it was defiantly a bit of a party atmosphere after 11pm.

Loft Del Born

What I love about this tapas bar is that it’s a lot more modern than any of the other tapas bars I’ve been to. Their classy decor makes it a great place to sit with a glass of wine, some friends, and great tapas. Don’t miss their cheese plate and the octopus served on top of thin potatoes. There’s limited outdoor seating, but tons inside.
